Daniel J. Villao

After more than 12 years in the electrical trade, Daniel reached a point in his career where he could no longer advance without a college degree. Determined to provide a better life for his family and reach his career goals, Daniel enrolled at University of Phoenix to work toward his bachelor’s degree. During his studies, Daniel landed a position with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers that paid nearly $20,000 more annually than his previous job. Daniel earned his bachelor’s degree in business in 2005 and went on to pursue his MBA. In 2006, he advanced his career yet again. Daniel now represents more than 145,000 construction workers as their representative to the Los Angeles and Orange Counties Building & Construction Trades Council. After working her way up from a receptionist to a manager for a large automotive product distributor, Julie found herself in a similar situation as her husband — she could no longer move up the career ladder without earning a degree. She put her goal of going to school aside while her husband was enrolled at University of Phoenix. Julie was focused on raising their children and working full time. Through the Paying it ForwardSM Scholarship Program, Julie will finally recognize her dream of earning a bachelor’s degree in business at University of Phoenix. She will be the first person in her family to graduate from college.
