While her friends were obtaining their college degrees in the “normal” time frame, approximately four years after high school, Christy found herself at age 30 without a degree because the traditional “bricks and mortar” school did not fit her busy lifestyle. She also was struggling to find her way after the loss of her infant son and a divorce a year later, so when she discovered University of Phoenix and its online accessibility, she rejoiced—then she thrived. Christy earned her bachelor’s degree in business finance and decided to continue her education. She will earn her MBA next year and believes her education has helped increase her confidence and skills, as well as her level of professionalism. Christy knows that with her advanced degree, she can move up within her current organization, or any organization, with the education and skills she has obtained. When she discovered an opportunity to help her friend Danielle Sabus with her education through the Paying it ForwardSM Scholarship Program, she jumped at the chance.

Danielle was always too busy helping other people to focus on helping herself. As a volunteer who travels frequently, Danielle did not have much time to think about her own educational and career goals. She currently serves as the Volunteer Director of Missions and Outreach at her local church, but without her college degree, she is hindered at moving up within any non-profit organization or company. Working 50 hours a week in a full-time job and an additional 30 hours a week in volunteer activities severely hampers Danielle’s efforts to participate in traditional college courses. Danielle felt that her dream of attending college was gone, but University of Phoenix’ flexible online programs and the Paying it ForwardSM Scholarship Program will help her finally help herself.
